Louisiana Get Ready For A Busy 2025 Hurricane Season
(Lake Charles, Louisiana) - The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season is shaping up to be a busy one, and Louisiana residents should start preparing now.
Colorado State University (CSU) released its extended-range forecast for the season, which officially begins on June 1 and runs through November 30.

What the Forecast Says
CSU's team of weather experts is predicting 17 named storms this year. Out of those, nine are expected to strengthen into hurricanes. Even more concerning, four of these hurricanes could reach major status, meaning they would have wind speeds of at least 111 mph and fall into Category 3, 4, or 5. Major hurricanes are powerful enough to cause serious damage to homes, roads, and power lines.
Higher Chances for Landfall
Each year, meteorologists calculate the odds of a major hurricane hitting different parts of the U.S. coastline. This year’s forecast shows that the probability of at least one Category 3 or stronger hurricane making landfall in the continental U.S. is 51%. That’s higher than the average of 43%.
The Gulf Coast, which includes Louisiana, has a 33% chance of seeing a major hurricane this season. This is also above the average of 27%. The numbers mean Louisiana has a greater risk of facing dangerous storms this year compared to past seasons.
The Caribbean is Also at Risk
Hurricanes often form in the warm waters of the Caribbean before moving toward the U.S. coastline. This year, there is a 56% chance that at least one major hurricane will track through the Caribbean, which is higher than the historical average of 47%.
Preparing for the Season
With a more active hurricane season predicted, Louisiana residents should take steps to prepare early. Here are some important things to do:
- Create an emergency plan: Know where you will go if you need to evacuate and have a way to communicate with family.
- Stock up on supplies: Have enough food, water, batteries, and medicine to last at least three days.
- Check your home and insurance: Make sure your house is ready for strong winds and heavy rain. Review your insurance policy to see what is covered.
- Stay informed: Watch the weather and listen to local officials for updates during the season.
Hurricanes are a part of life in Louisiana, but being prepared can make all the difference. With an active season ahead, it’s important to stay ready and stay safe.
