The Lake Charles VA Clinic will be renamed after local Medal of Honor recipient.

KPLC is reporting that the Clinic will now be known as the “Douglas Fournet VA Clinic," in honor of Douglas Bernard Fournet.

Fournet grew up in Lake Charles and graduated from Lake Charles High and attended McNeese University.

He served in Vietnam as a first lieutenant and died in a firefight while attempting to disarm a landmine. Fournet was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for protecting his fellow soldiers by using his body as a shield from the mine. He's currently the only recipient of this prestigious award from SWLA.

President Donald Trump signed the legislation into law on January 3, 2019 to change the name of the facility to honor Fournet.
