Lake Charles Second Harvest Mobile Market Is August 20, 2022
For nearly 40 years Second Harvest Food Bank has been feeding SWLA residents in need. Now more than ever, people of all ages are in danger of going hungry due to escalating food and gas prices. Folks in need are really having a hard time having to choose whether they eat or buy gas to get to work.
It's in times like these that Second Harvest wanted to step up to the plate to lend a helping hand to others struggling with inflation. They recently started the Second Harvest Mobile Service to help combat the growing crisis of food insecurities in SWLA by bringing food directly to communities at a reduced price. Regional Director Paul Scelfo and Impact Operations Manager Brittany Bowie explained how the food bank's mobile market works.
Scelfo said they started the food service so that they could bring food to areas that don't have access to grocery stores. The goal of the mobile market is to bring food to communities that need it most. We want to "help people load up their pantries with food at an economical price." Scelfo added. Brittany Bowie told KPLC, "It's important for us to offer fresh produce and fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs and milk." Bowie continued, that areas like the community near New Sunlight Baptist Church in Lake Charles are still dealing with the aftermath of the two hurricanes that struck SWLA two years ago. She said people need food that they can afford, so they can cook for their families.
Local residents can purchase food at the Mobile Market with EBT/SNAP, as well as credit/debit cards. Another way team members are making a difference is by connecting to a host of other Second Harvest resources in the area. Second Harvest Mobile Market is the perfect way to make sure folks have the food they need. This event happens on the 3rd Saturday of every month and the next Mobile Market is August 30, 2022. Place and time TBA or follow them on Facebook to learn more about how you can get help, donate and volunteer as well.
