Lafayette Native Dustin Poirier Challenges For UFC World Title
Saturday night in Atlanta Lafayette native and UFC standout Dustin Poirier will step into the octagon and do something he's never done before. He will fight for a UFC world title.
Although Poirier's pedigree shows him as the veteran of some 30 UFC fights and many times on the fight card as the main event, this will be the first time he will fight with a world title on the line. Poirier is scheduled to meet Max Holloway as part of UFC 236 on Saturday night with the interim lightweight title on the line.
Poirer and his wife Jolie now live in Florida but their ties back to Acadiana have never been stronger. The couple has started a charity called The Good Fight Foundation which connects charitable endeavors to Poiriers' fights.
Following Saturday's fight, Poirier will auction off his fight kit through the foundation to raise funds for a new playground for children with disabilities at Lafayette's Prairie Elementary School. Jolie, Dustin's wife told ESPN that if the auction doesn't raise enough money then the couple will fund the project out of their own pockets.
You just have to love South Louisiana people and their generosity.
Holloway and Poirier will be competing Saturday with the UFC's interim lightweight belt on the line. That event is set for Saturday night at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. It will be televised via pay per view. Here is how to watch.
