Kaplan Officially Names Street After Sammy Kershaw

A few weeks ago we told you about the council in Kaplan voting to rename a section of E. Second St. after Sammy Kershaw. That officially came to fruition in a dedication ceremony yesterday.

The town also proclaimed it Sammy Kershaw Day.

The street now named in his honor is actually the street where he grew up.

"Today was something," Kershaw told KATC TV-3 after the ceremony. "I had some big big dreams when I was a kid. One was to have a hit record and to have a tour bus. And I just knew I would have that. But never in my life have I ever thought about a street being renamed for me, especially the street I grew up on, where I lived as a boy.”

The idea came about recently when several citizens approached Kaplan mayor Mike Kloesel about naming a street after Kershaw. He talked it over with the council and they all decided it was a great idea.

“It’s just a total surprise,” Kershaw said. “I never expected it, but to me, it’s got to be one of the biggest honors your hometown can do for you. For your hometown to do something like that for you, it doesn’t happen too often.”

For his career, Kershaw has released 16 studio albums, with three of them going platinum and two gold. He's placed more than 25 of his songs on the Billboard Country Top 40 chart, reaching the top with "She Don't Know She's Beautiful" and 10 others making the top 10.
