BATON ROUGE, La. (KPEL News) - The Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) has announced a comprehensive review of the state’s student standards for math and English language arts (ELA). The review process, approved by the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE), aims to refine these fundamental academic standards, which were last updated nearly a decade ago.

The LDOE is inviting Louisiana educators, administrators, school system staff, higher education faculty, parents, and community members to participate in the standards review committees. Interested individuals can apply online through January 27, 2025, at 8 a.m. Selected participants will be notified in late February, with final approval by BESE in March.

"This is a profound opportunity to pursue academic excellence in Louisiana classrooms," said Dr. Cade Brumley, Louisiana State Superintendent of Education. "I’m excited about an increased focus on phonics, grammar, and foundational math skills."

BESE President Ronnie Morris echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of engaging parents, educators, and stakeholders in the process. "Robust academic standards lay the groundwork for a meaningful and relevant educational experience, helping ensure that Louisiana’s students will be well-prepared for career and post-secondary opportunities," said Morris.

Review Committees and Timeline

The review committees will include a steering committee and content-specific workgroups for ELA and math. Comprised of Louisiana stakeholders, these committees will meet from April through July, with all meetings open to the public.

Goals for the Standards Review

The review process will focus on enhancing foundational skills in both subjects:

  • English Language Arts Goals:
    • Strengthen the progression of foundational reading skills in elementary grades.
    • Reinforce grammar, usage, and mechanics standards.
    • Provide grade-specific reading exemplars, including world, American, and Louisiana texts.
  • Math Goals:
    • Enhance the progression of foundational skills and support advanced skills like logic and reasoning.
    • Identify math pathways tailored for success in college, careers, or service.

Standards vs. Curriculum

It’s essential to note the distinction between standards and curriculum. Standards define what students are expected to learn in a specific grade or subject, while curriculum determines how those standards are taught. Local school systems in Louisiana select their own curriculum, supported by tools and resources provided by the LDOE, including the Teacher Support Toolbox.

The LDOE encourages those with questions to contact classroomsupporttoolbox@la.gov. This initiative marks an important step in ensuring Louisiana students are well-prepared for future academic and professional challenges.
