MAYDAY: Louisiana Animal Shelters MUST Be Cleared Before Francine, All Animals Face Euthanasia Risk
As Tropical Storm Francine approaches, animal shelters across Louisiana are forced to make incredibly tough decisions. Every rescue and shelter is at max capacity, and with a major storm headed our way, many dogs, including puppies, will be euthanized if fosters don't come forward.
Our friends in animal rescue say the calls have not stopped. People are surrendering their pets left and right before Francine makes landfall. Shelters across the state, including Crowley City and Acadia Parish Animal Control, are in desperate need of fosters. Any dog left is at risk of being euthanized.
This post is not meant to spread hate to these shelters or volunteers; instead, we are trying to help get the word out, but we need a miracle.
"The shelter has 17 kennels. They bring in more than that most weeks and stray hold is 5 days. We can not wait until hold is up to post. Sometimes 5 day hold is all they have. Sometimes they shorten that. Individual release dates are on their pictures. There is no time guaranteed after their hold date. They can be euthanized at any point once their hold is up and we won’t get a last minute call letting us know. Their hold date is the notice. There are no long timers here. They may get a few extra days if we can move enough to have a free kennel. Maybe a week extra. A month? Nearly unheard of here. They don’t have the room."
Fosters Urgently Needed Across Louisiana
If you are in a position to foster a dog temporarily, please do so. Many shelters will assist you so that taking the animal in is not a financial burden. Acadiana Animal Aid will provide you with all the necessities: food, a crate, leash, collar, etc. as well as oversee all medical care needed. As a foster all you have to do is give them love and daily care.
Temporarily fostering a dog for the storm will save them from being euthanized.
Please, if you can, consider fostering and sharing this post.
