(KMDL-FM) When the summer sun is beating down on you in a merciless fashion, as it has been known to do here in South Louisiana, an ice-cold soft drink can be a blessing. Granted, your health care professionals would say you'd be smarter to be drinking water, but still, refreshment is refreshment, and hydration will be important today from Lake Charles to Lafayette, to Baton Rouge, and on across I-10 to New Orleans.

When it comes to soft drink refreshment across Louisiana and across the nation, most of us reach for a Coke when given the choice of what soda pop we'd like to drink. The number two choice behind Coke is Dr. Pepper. The third choice in soft drinks is Sprite, followed by number four, which is Pepsi, and rounding out the top five is Diet Coke. This information was provided by Beverage Digest, by the way.

Most of you are aware that Coke and Pepsi might be the two major "players" in the soft drink wars, but those brands are actually a part of many brands controlled by their parent companies. The folks at Pepsico not only bring you Pepsi, but also Mountain Dew, Lipton Tea, Gatorade, Aquafina, and you get the idea.

They have announced via a press release that they are discontinuing nine soda flavors. And they are also ending production of 12 other sparkling waters, Gatorade, and energy drinks.
