Louisiana at Risk For Severe Storms and Rising Temperatures Today
Louisiana forecast remains a slightly above normal mixed bag as far as typical July weather conditions go. Most of the state will once again face the threat of strong to severe storms with heavy downpours of rain again today. While those parts of Louisiana that dodge the raindrops will be feeling the heat of summer's vengeance as once again heat indices will be rising well into the triple-digits.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed a large swath of Louisiana at a marginal risk for severe storms today. The entire state with the exception of the northern and northeastern tip is included in that area of concern from the SPC. For the most part, the biggest threat of storms will come in the afternoon and early evening hours. The National Weather Service Forecast Office in Lake Charles has narrowed the time frame to between 2 pm and sunset.
Forecasters say the threat of heavy downpours will be possible in some of the slower-moving showers and storms that could form over the area today. For that reason, the Weather Prediction Center has placed much of the same area under a marginal risk for excessive rainfall. Excessive rainfall is when the weather service forecasts the probability of rainfall rates exceeding flash flood guidance.
Think of that one street in your town that always fills up with water when there is a heavy rain event. That's the kind of showers or storms we will likely see today. Not everyone will see rain or storms but those who do could see some pretty significant weather.
Meanwhile, if you miss out on the showers just know your moisture will be falling in the form of sweat from your brow. The counties of east Texas just across the Sabine River are under a heat advisory this morning and throughout the day. Speculation is that those advisories will be moving into Louisiana later this week.
Forecast high temperatures are expected to be in the middle 90s by the middle of the week and those advisories along with a threat of storms will be what we can expect almost every day through Friday.
