Iconic Beach Bar Celebrates 60 Years – It’s Louisiana’s Favorite
"Because no great story ever started with a salad", Louisiana beachgoers who frequent the Redneck Riveria of Lower Alabama and the Florida Panhandle know exactly where the sign that has that phrase is located.
Sunseekers from Shreveport, Monroe, Alexandria, Lafayette, and Baton Rouge all have a story that starts here. The problem with a lot of those beach buzz stories is that no one can remember exactly how they end.
Since 1964 there has been a bar, watering hole, social gathering hub, music venue, hook-up joint, bachelorette party host, and a place to pee that's not the ocean located at the state line that separates Florida and Alabama. The historic location has been romanced in songs and stories of the Gulf South for 60 years and on Sunday, they'd like to buy you a drink.
Yes, we are discussing the world-famous Flora-Bama Lounge, Package & Oyster Bar. Everyone I know has a Flora-Bama story. And when you consider how many people have made stopping at the Flora-Bama a priority over the past 60 years I would think the celebration they have planned for this Sunday would be epic.
This Sunday the Flora-Bama is hosting an anniversary event from 1 pm to 5 pm. They'll be serving guests a slice of birthday cake and if you're 21 or older, you'll get a special birthday card that entitles you to one free drink on the house.
The afternoon will also feature an incredible musical lineup of bands and performers who have frequented the Flora-Bama through the years. Sunday's lineup includes Lucky Doggs, the Jason Justice Duo, the JT McCafferty Band, Kyle Brady, Kaleb King, Jessie Wilson & Tory Grace, Al & Cathy, and Dew Pendleton.
For a lot of us, the Flora-Bama is a must-stop destination during every beach vacation. The vibe is always laid back, the people are always friendly, and the beer has never been warm. The iconic bar has hosted the likes of Kenny Chesney and Jimmy Buffett, and countless other troubadours who love to share songs of life along the map edge where it all turns blue.
This Sunday the Flora-Bama may turn 60 but everyone that walks in, no matter what their driver's license might say, will be young at heart at a place where the memories make time stand still.
