Agents with Louisiana's Department of Wildlife and Fisheries know that this weekend, the weekend of June 8th and 9th, will be especially busy. There are a couple of reasons why LDWF agents anticipate larger than usual crowds on the water.

The first is that most of us across Louisiana have been kept off the lakes, bays, and bayous this week because of severe thunderstorms. So, anyone who loves to fish will have the "envie" to go wet a line and land a lunker.

The second reason you'll probably see more poles at the fishin' holes is because this weekend you don't need a fishing license to fish in Louisiana. It's the state's annual Free Fishing Weekend and it's the perfect for some family time enjoying a time-honored tradition in our state.

Here's How to Make The Louisiana Free Fishing Weekend Even More Memorable

If you're looking to get your kids away from those flickering computer and telephone screens a day on or beside the water is a great idea. Fishing is a lot of fun in Louisiana. However, catching fish is even more fun. What's the best way to catch more fish? Simple, you fish where the fish are.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife has recently restocked several ponds and lakes around the state to encourage more people to go fishing. There are 17 different ponds in the state stocked with adult channel catfish. That means they're a good size and if you're a little boy or girl with your Zebco 33 rig, it will feel as if you've landed a whale.

Catching a Fish is One of Mankind's Top Five Thrills

Did you know that? A recent survey showed that "catching a fish" was rated high on a list of American's most cherished childhood memories. Some of the others were shooting a gun and driving a car for the first time. So, this weekend, during Free Fishing Weekend, why not make a memory for your children? I bet it will become a memory for you.

One thing we should note about the Louisiana Free Fishing Weekend is this, no you don't need a license to fish on Saturday or Sunday. But, you are still expected to follow all other LDWF fishing rules. Those rules apply to the size, species, number of fish caught, and the kind of equipment you can use to land those fish.

And if this weekend sparks an interest in fishing in Louisiana you'll be pleased to know that obtaining your Louisiana Fishing License is easy to do. You can just use this link. Once you've paid the fee you can even download the license and have it placed in your Louisiana Wallet on your smartphone if desire.
