Louisiana Teacher Allegedly Attacked a Special Needs Student
A teacher at a school in St. Helena Parish allegedly attacked a student in the classroom and now the parents of the teenager want answers and the teacher prosecuted.
The alleged incident happened at the St. Helena College and Career Academy last week and the parent of the student tells WBRZ that he found out about the attack on his daughter after she texted him to inform him of it. He said that as a result of the altercation with the teacher, his daughter had a chunk of hair pulled from her head.
Carlos Burms, the parent of the student who the teacher attacked, told WBRZ this about his daughter, "She has a special education plan for special needs and behavioral disorders."
Burns says that his daughter is a good kid, but when corned or approached aggressively, she will react. The father of the teenager says that his daughter was going through counseling/therapy for her issues and that she reacted in the way she had been instructed.
The student's dad says his daughter shut down and quit responding, and that is when he thinks the teacher cornered his daughter and kept taunting her, which escalated the situation.
The teacher at the school, Ambria Cook, was arrested for simple battery, and Burns says the school district has been very helpful to him and his family during this difficult time.
The Baton Rouge television station reports that the teacher will be in court in October, and as of now, the student is not facing any disciplinary actions from the school district.
