States With the Most Mosquitoes, Louisiana Doesn’t Rank First

The mosquitoes in South Louisiana are swarming and they've forced many of us indoors during the evening hours.

This past summer, which was one of the hottest summers on record, wasn't so bad when it came to the mosquito population and some speculate the heat may have kept the pests at bay.

Well, they're back, and as we enter the fall months the mosquitoes have returned with a vengeance. And as bad as the mosquitoes are here in Louisiana, they may be worse in some of the neighboring states.

According to Proven Repellent, Louisiana doesn't rank the highest among states when it comes to the mosquito population.

The state with the highest mosquito population is Texas. Perhaps the size of the state and the amount of open land has something to do with the mosquito population there.

So, if Texas has the most mosquitoes, you'd think Louisiana ranks second. Well, according to Proven Repellent the state of Florida comes in second and Louisiana follows in third.

While I am not shocked to see Florida at the top of states with the most mosquitoes, I am a bit surprised to see Texas at the top of the list when it comes to where most mosquitoes are.

7. South Dakota
8. Oklahoma
9. Montana
10. Virginia

Now, when it comes to cities with the worst mosquito population, no city in Louisiana makes the list. And honestly, I don't know how Lafayette, which is surrounded by fields, isn't on this list.

2. Los Angeles, California
3. Washington, DC
4. New York, New York
5. Chicago, Illinois
6. Dallas-Ft. Worth, Texas
7. Detroit, Michigan
8. Charlotte, North Carolina
9. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
10. Miami, Florida

Here are some ways you can reduce the mosquito population in your yard at home:

1.  Remove or prevent standing water
2. Treat your pard for the pests during the summer and early fall
3. Keep grass and shrubs short and maintained
4. Fill in low spots in the yard that may "hold water"
5.  Place mosquito traps on your patio
