5 Top States Winning the Most Mega Millions Jackpots

It was November 16, 2011, when the state of Louisiana began offering to players the chance to buy Mega Millions tickets. Powerball has been offered in our state since March 2, 1995.

Today the estimated jackpot for the Tuesday night drawing is $1.1 billion. If you opt for the cash payout, officials with Mega Millions estimate you would receive $525.8 million. This is the ninth-largest Mega Millions jackpot on record.

The state of Louisiana has never had a Mega Millions jackpot winner since making tickets available for purchase 12 and a half years ago. That doesn't mean we don't have winners of other prizes, but no one who has purchased a ticket in Louisiana has been able to get all six numbers for the major prize.

#5 Michigan

The state of Michigan has 18 winners of a Mega Millions jackpot. The prize was won by four people who were part of a club according to CBS News. They split a $1.05 billion dollar prize, which after taxes, amounted to $557 million. They won the January 22, 2021.

#4 Ohio

The state of Ohio has 20 winners of a Mega Millions jackpot. The biggest win for that state was $375 million which was won by the TrustMulhall. The folks in the trust decided on the cash option according to the ohiolottery.com.

#3 New Jersey

The state of New Jersey has 22 winners of a Mega Millions jackpot. According to lotto.com the biggest Mega Millions Jackpot was won by Richard Wahl. He won $533 million after buying his ticket at a gas station in Riverdale.

#2 California

California has 34 winners of the Mega Millions jackpot. The biggest Mega Millions prize went to a group of people in 2018 according to KTLA. The people in the office pool in Santa Clara County split a $543 million prize.

In the state of New York, there have been 43 jackpots that have been claimed in the Mega Millions game according to their website. The biggest jackpot was won by a man from Queens named Johnnie Taylor. He won a $483 million jackpot with a cash payout value of $256.9 million.
