Are You Showing Up at Work or School Exhausted?

If we know that going to sleep earlier will allow us to sleep more and wake up feeling better why don't we take ourselves to bed at a decent time? If better sleep makes us healthier overall, why aren't we doing everything possible to sleep better? The Guardian just spoke with several sleep experts concerning the biggest "sleep mistakes" that Americans are making.

Hurricanes and Crazy Weather Isn't Making Louisianans Lose Sleep, It Is Our Bad Habits.

We scoured the list and "a room without a fan set on high and the temperature set at 68 degrees" was not on the list, however, most of us in Louisiana swear that going to sleep without a fan in the room no matter the time of the year will not allow you to have your best sleep.

Check Out the Top 10 Sleep Mistakes Most People Make According to the Guardian Below;

1. "Not knowing how much sleep you really need". Chances are that you are not even close to getting seven to nine hours of sleep per night, start paying attention to yourself, are you moody? Are you able to focus?

2. "Eating too much, or too little, before bed". One of the worst feelings is heartburn or indigestion especially when you're laying in bed. You can also stay up with literal hunger pains, so eat before bed, however, eat early enough before bed so you don't get heartburn.

3. "Screens before bed". The hardest thing for many of us is to put our phones down. It isn't so much about the blue light that screens give off, but more about the stimulation.

4. "Not winding down." Did you know that you need anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes of wind-down time before going to bed?

5. "Napping too much". As much as we may love a nap, our naps need to stay under 30 minutes, so you can fall asleep at night.

6. "Spending too much time awake in bed." Did you know that the longer you spend in bed NOT sleeping the more your body gets used to it.

7. "Not getting enough sleep on weeknights." You thought that you could go nonstop Monday through Friday and then all of a sudden catch up on the weekends? Think again.

8. "Keeping an inconsistent sleep schedule." Our bodies struggle to adjust, so sleeping in on weekends isn't ideal for anyone.

9. "Too much caffeine and alcohol." Did you know that caffeine takes up to eight hours to metabolize? Also, alcohol normally gets you a worse night's sleep.

10. "Worrying about sleep. It can be a self-fulfilling prophecy." If you have been stressing yourself out thinking you won't be able to fall asleep you won't. Do your best to relax.
