Did You Know This Louisiana Law Affects How You Can Name Your Baby?
It feels like most of my friends are busy planning baby showers and bringing babies home, and one of the most exciting things I've witnessed are the name reveals. But one thing several parents might not consider is the list of banned names.
Although I wish my middle name was one of the banned names in the U.S., it isn't offensive enough to anyone besides me! The crazy part is that the ten names that are illegal to use are just the beginning of the rules. The Bayou State even jumped in and added its own twist to limiting your name ideas.
Louisiana's Unique Naming Laws
Louisiana has a simple rule, but it’s an important one: names must consist only of letters from the standard English alphabet. This means no special symbols, numbers, or foreign characters. While it might not seem like a crazy rule, Elon Musk may be the only person bothered by this rule in Louisiana since he is known for naming his children a series of numbers and letters.
So, we can still name our children after animals in the good ole Bayou State, but you won't be seeing any babies named "X Æ A-12."
The Names You Can't Legally Use
According to USBirthCertificates.com, there are ten names that you just can't give your child, no matter what. After going through the list, I could have sworn I have met someone with the name Majesty, which is on the list of no-nos. Could I be making that up in my head? I guess I’ll never know. And of course, when you see the name Adolf Hitler on the list, you can’t help but think, “Who on earth tried to name their child that?” right?
These ten names are just the start, though. Many states have even stricter rules, banning names with offensive language, titles like "King" or "Queen," or names that include numbers. The good news is, most of us probably weren’t going to name our children things like that anyway. I'm just happy to know my middle name is boring enough to be allowed on a birth certificate.
Let's see the list of names that aren't allowed:
