You may know this guy. Mr. Joseph "Run" Simmons. He is without question, a Hip Hop pioneer, an ordained minister, an author and motivational speaker, a husband, and a father. He earned the nickname, Run, while DJing for the iconic rapper,  Kurtis Blow, as a teenager in the early 80s.

THE HISTORY

He earned the nickname, Run, while DJing for the iconic rapper,  Kurtis Blow, as a teenager in the early 80s. In 1983, Run formed the group, Run-DMC, with friends Darryl McDaniels and DJ Jason Mizell in Hollis Queens, New York. A year later in 1984, Rick Rubin co-founded Def Jam Records with his brother Russell Simmons in his Weinstein Hall dorm room at New York University.

With their first three albums, which were released consecutively, they were catapulted into music superstardom: Run-D.M.C. (1984) Gold, King of Rock (1985) Platinum, and Raising Hell (1986) Multi-Platinum. The rest is music history and today Run-DMC is one of the most influential groups in the history of Hip-Hop. They did a lot for fashion culture too! I don't know anyone who didn't have an Adidas tracksuit or a pair of clamshell Adidas tennis shoes.

THE JOURNEY

Over the years Run has evolved in both his career and personal life. Wanting to be closer to God, he became an ordained minister in 1994. From his relationship with God, Rev Run began writing and sharing his daily affirmations of positivity, known as "Rev Run's Words of Wisdom" and "God Is Love" on social media. His spiritual journey has become a light for others. Encouraging his fans to start a gratitude journal, Rev motivates his millions of fans every day with spiritual reflections and notes of love.

Rev Run has also been featured in several reality TV shows, including MTV's, Run's House revolving around his everyday life and his family. He and his wife Justine released the book Old School Love: And Why It Works in 2020 and went on a small book tour to promote it. Is there anything this man hasn't done? Probably not.
