Call me crazy, but I like to clean with certain products. If a store is out, I will go to another to purchase the products I prefer to use. I'm a real stickler about that. Well, turns out I love lemon Pine-Sol (a Clorox Company Brand.) It is the only cleaning product I have ever used, other than bleach. I ran out a little more than a month ago. Have you noticed, you can't buy it or find it anywhere? What happened?

I had gone to several stores in town and one after the other, nobody had it in stock. I've gone online to purchase a few bottles, and I had no luck there either. At first, I thought it may be out because it is a popular brand. I would ask store employees if they knew why it was out of stock, or if it was on back order and no one had an answer. It was pretty frustrating because it just disappeared off the shelves.

Why Can't I Find Lemon Pine-Sol?

Regardless of how popular lemon Pine-Sol may or may not be, I knew there was no way EVERYONE could be out of it at the same time. So, I went to the Pine-Sol website, and to my surprise, this notice was posted on the front page:

Dear Pine-Sol Community.

Pine-Sol is voluntarily recalling certain scented Pine-Sol® cleaners as we learned that some products may contain bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa. People with weakened immune systems or external medical devices who are exposed to Pseudomonas aeruginosa face a risk of serious infection that may require medical treatment.

The bacteria can enter the body if inhaled, through the eyes, or through a break in the skin. People with healthy immune systems are usually not affected by the bacteria. We are conducting this recall to safeguard your health and well-being.

Importantly, Original Pine-Sol (Pine scent) is not included in this recall and you may continue to safely use it as intended. Consumers who have products matching the following description in their possession should stop using it immediately and follow the instructions below to request a refund.

Yes! You are seeing what I am seeing. There is a voluntary recall on lemon Pine-Sol (and other cleaners) due to a bacteria called Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The moment I read this press release I thought, "How in the world can a product that is used to kill bacteria, have bacteria?" Is this even possible? The full Clorox Recall press release is on the Consumer Products Safety Commission website cpsc.gov for more info.

From what it looks like, the Clorox/Pine-Sol products that were affected, like my beloved lemon Pine-Sol, are not disinfectants. The only Pine-Sol not impacted by the recall is the original, which is a disinfectant. Meanwhile, this bacteria according to the CDC is bad business. Taking it off the shelves was a good idea. If you have a bottle of lemon Pine-sol or would like to see a list of other Pine-Sol/Clorox brands that have been affected by this recall click here.

What To Do If I Have Pine-Sol Products Affected in Recall?

To fill out a form to get reimbursed for your purchase click here or call 1-855-378-4982 if you have questions and need more details. For now, there is no info on whether or not the lemon Pine-Sol will return to store shelves. Do you think Pine-Sol/Clorox could have done a better job alerting the public of the possible danger and exposure risks?
