Louisiana State Police Troop D and the Louisiana Passenger Safety Task Force are teaming up for a Free Child Seat Check event in Lake Charles on Saturday, March 11. If you are a new parent, just bought a car seat, or have grandparents, or guardians of children who use a car seat, stop by.

Safety professionals welcome the public out to Lake Charles Toyota (3905 Gerstner Memorial Blvd.) from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Nationally certified child passenger safety seat technicians will be on hand conducting child safety seat inspections and assisting parents/caregivers/grandparents and guardians with making sure those car seats are properly installed.

Believe it or not, 9 out of 10 car seats are installed wrong. That's right! Is your child's seat one of them? According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration,

96 Percent of parents and caregivers believe their child safety seats are installed correctly, but NHTSA research shows that 7 out of 10 children are improperly restrained, putting them at risk for serious injury or death in a crash.

Car accidents are the leading cause of death of children ages 3-14, but many can be prevented with the proper use of a car seat. Data shows that events like this work.  It is equally important that caregivers ensure on every trip that children are restrained in an appropriate child safety seat, booster seat, or seat belt every time.

If you cannot attend the car seat event but would like a child seat inspected, call and make an appointment with LSP Troop D by calling (337) 491-2513. The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission and Lake Charles Toyota support this event.
