5 Things Outdated Things People Say They Want To Bring Back
Technology is great, don't get me wrong. It's convenient. It makes our lives easier and has advanced so much that just about everything is computerized or digitized. I'm not complaining. However, like most people, there are some nostalgic treats, electronics, and old TV shows I wish were still around.
Saturdays were something to look forward to, especially when we were at home. There were the Saturday morning cartoons like Bugs Bunny, Looney Toons, The Flintstones, and such. Then all of the music and video shows like 106 & Park, Yo MTV Raps or Soul Train, and American Bandstand. I'm not alone. I came across a few posts simular to this were people were reminiscing about old-school novelties they miss and below are a few I identified with.
1. PUSH BUTTON/ROTARY LANDLINE PHONE
You know what they say, "You never miss the water til the well runs dry." It may seem insignificant, but during severe weather events communicating can be difficult. When the power is out and the cell phone towers are damaged, devices that use wifi or the internet such as computers, tablets, and cell phones are useless. For that matter, cordless phones use wall plugs and do not work without electricity.
Ironically, a lot of telephone lines are underground and prove to be quite reliable when every other technical source has been damaged due to wind, ice, snow, and water. I can testify to that point. I live in an area that gets hit by hurricanes, flooding, and ice storms. We still have a landline and it was our only source of communication after Hurricanes Rita and Laura. So, I keep an old-school push button in my file cabinet just in case. The line is only $10 a month, so it's worth it during emergencies.
2. FAMILY DINNER OR SUNDAY FAMILY GET TOGETHER
Does anyone remember family dinners? This is something that is going away, even with the closest-knit families. Technology has taken up the space of talking and enjoying each other's company. You can go to restaurants today and see people sitting across from each other and everyone is on their phones! I can remember meeting up with family on Sunday and having a home-cooked meal. A lot of us have gotten away from that. I was just telling my family we need to see each other more often.
3. SCHOOL CHALKBOARD
4. OLD SCHOOL CANDY
Who doesn't remember those good old Pop-Rocks? They would not only pop in your mouth and down your throat but leave your mouth with wonderful dark purple, blue, or green! What about Now-Or-Laters, Lemon Drops, Red Heads, Abba-Zabba, Bit-O-Honey, and others? My absolute favorite was the chocolate Charleston Chew and the candy or bubble gum cigarettes.
Even though the real ones aren't good for us, the candy kind was a blast! I can remember the bubble gum ones that shot powder out the end. We thought we were grown, walking around with those things. I remember the gum was super hard too! But hey, those were the days. Back in the day candy was not only fun, but good!
5. FAMILY TV SITCOMS
Who could forget All In The Family, Different Strokes, The Jeffersons, What's Happening, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Good Times, The Cosby Show, and more? Those were the days, as Edith and Archie would say!
They were memorable, always had a great message, with real-world storylines all viewers could relate to. I still watch the reruns of most of them today. Watching my kids discover the same shows I watched is pretty cool as well.
Did any of those things strike a nerve? Do you have something to add to my list? I'm interested to see what old-school things you miss or wish were still around. Leave your answer in the comments and let's see if others will join us.
