Louisiana Is Full of Speed Traps and These Are the Worst
It was a simple question that I posted to my personal Facebook page, but the overwhelming number of responses literally blew me out of the water.
What Louisiana town are you most likely to get a ticket in? That was the question, and once asked, the Facebook flood gates opened wide.
First off, I need to thank everyone who gladly offered their opinion and personal experiences, and secondly, after seeing many of those responses, I'd like to offer a warning to motorists traveling through these areas. Slow down! These cities might very well be "speed traps" but we've all been warned.
It would appear to me that traveling south on I-49 from Desoto Parish on to LA 190 just north of Lafayette, and then eastward on LA 190, you're only asking for a ticket if you're even slightly over the speed limit. That stretch accounts for the largest percentage of responses I got including both Number One and Number Two!
#1 - Washington, La.
Washington was easily the most nominated town for Located along I-49 in St. Landry Parish and with a population of only 964 at the last census, it would almost appear that everyone who lives there works for the police or Sheriff. And evidently, they are serious about speeding. Brian Addison even wrote, "They will write their mother a ticket."
#2 - Port Barre, La.
Many of those traveling to LSU games who might take LA 190 to go east from I-49, are extremely familiar with this little town. Many have evidently helped out with the law enforcement budget. Be wise to take your time when heading through here.
#3 - Krotz Springs, La
While many of us marvel at the huge bridge over the Atchafalaya River on LA 190 here in Krotz Springs, we need to remember to do it under the speed limit. The police here will remind you that Speed Limit sign isn't just a suggestion. Traci even wrote, "Alex once got one for 5 miles over… $300!!!"
#4 - Woodworth, La.
Another one of those wonderful speed traps along I-49 in Rapides Parish just south of Alexandria. They should almost make the town motto, "Take Your Time and Enjoy The Scenery Here in Woodworth....Or We Can Help You Slow Down. It's Your Choice."
#5 - Blanchard, La.
As my hometown, I can testify that Blanchard earned it's place on this list. While not as bad as it once was, it's still not a place where you want to test your patience. Slow down and whatever you do, don't run the red light. There's only one, so it's easy to spot.
#6 - Bunkie, La.
From the number of nominations we got for this little town in Avoyelles Parish along Hwy 71, you'd think the main industry here was speeding travelers.
#7 - Converse, La.
While still serious about speeders, they aren't quite as bad here as days gone by. I can personally attest to the reputation that Converse once had as a speeding trap. No, I never got a ticket there, but anyone who used Hwy 171 to go to Toledo Bend back in the 80's and 90's knew, "You NEVER speed through Converse."
#8 - Grand Cane, La.
While Desoto Parish was definitely well represented with nominations for the parish itself and the city of Stonewall, it was Grand Cane that showed the greatest number of speeding incidents with people in my poll. It even got a vote from my own wife, Julie.
We also had some "Honorable Mentions" for Greenwood, Haughton, Mooringsport, Oil City, Cotton Valley, Mamou, Turkey Creek, Sibley, Baskin, Arcadia, Dodson, Jeanerette, Ringgold, Ball, Robeline and Pine Prairie, but I think the best response we got was from Kevin who wrote, "Bossier ‘cause that’s where I speed the most!"
Sounds reasonable to me.
