Louisiana Town Named “Most Difficult To Pronounce” In America
I always love running across different News Stories about Louisiana, this one in particular caught my eye because for 42 years on this earth no matter what, I still mess up the saying of this small town.
Many cities in Louisiana are difficult for long-time inhabitants to pronounce correctly. It is therefore not surprising when visitors are left baffled by the pronunciation of some of the unusual city names. The Bayou State has designated one of its little towns as one of the hardest to pronounce in the country.
Small Louisiana Town Named "Most Difficult To Pronounce" in America
The hardest-to-pronounce town names in America were identified by Reader's Digest. Towns like Quonochontaug, Rhode Island; Oconomowoc, Wisconsin; and Nacogdoches, Texas, are on the list.
Reader's Digest claims that although Natchitoches appears to be simple to say, it frequently stumps visitors from other cities:
In Louisiana, Natchitoches, the oldest settlement of the Louisiana Purchase, is pronounced NAH-code-ish. Don’t confuse it with the similarly named town in Texas (see below). Nacogdoches, which is pronounced NAH-coh-DOE-chess.
What is the proper way to say "Natchitoches"? You've probably butchered it at least once if you're not from Louisiana. The correct pronunciation is "Nack-a-tish," which is completely nonsensical if you're just reading it from a sign. However, that's simply Louisiana's charm!
For residents, this small town, which is well-known for its rich history and lovely Christmas Festival, is just another aspect of our state's distinct appeal. Louisiana loves to keep people guessing, whether it's at the Atchafalaya Basin or on Tchoupitoulas Street in New Orleans. Therefore, simply say "Bless your heart" and teach them the proper approach the next time you hear someone having trouble with Natchitoches.
