How the Government Shutdown Impacts Louisiana Residents
(KNGT-FM) - The federal government has officially shut down. How does that affect Louisiana residents? We're taking a deep dive into how the shutdown could affect us locally...

WHY DID THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHUT DOWN?
The government shut down because Republicans and Democrats couldn’t agree on how to fund federal programs. Congress must pass a spending bill to keep the government running, but the two sides are divided. Democrats aim to maintain funding for health programs and extend tax credits for insurance, while Republicans have their own budget proposals. A temporary bill was passed in the House but failed in the Senate, which caused the shutdown.
Due to the shutdown, many jobs and services have been suspended. How does that affect Louisiana residents and our day-to-day lives? Here's what we've figured out.

Many federal employees in Louisiana could be among those going without paychecks. About 40% of the federal workforce has been put on unpaid leave. “Essential” workers, like air traffic controllers, TSA agents, border patrol, and medical staff, will still have to work but won’t get paid until the shutdown ends.
Air Travel Could Be Affected
Whether you're in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Alexandria, Lake Charles, or even Shreveport, you could have longer wait times if you're trying to fly out. Air traffic controllers and TSA workers will still be on the job, but without pay.
Parks & Zoos
During past shutdowns, national parks were either closed or left open without staff. Louisiana residents planning to visit places like Kisatchie National Forest or national historic sites COULD find gates locked or fewer services available.
GOOD NEWS: Mail Will Continue To Run
You will still get your mail! The U.S. Postal Service is funded through its own sales and is not affected by the shutdown.
Hopefully, lawmakers will be able to quickly resolve their differences, and we can get back to functioning normally. Until then, you might just notice a few things operating differently.
