Anahuac, Texas, is a small town with a big history. Located in Chambers County near the Trinity River and Galveston Bay, it has been important in Texas history for over 150 years.

How It All Began

The area was originally home to the Atakapan and Karankawa Native American tribes. In 1721, French explorer Jean Baptiste de La Harpe visited the region. Later, in 1816, Colonel Henry Perry set up a military post here, calling it Perry’s Point. In 1830, Mexican Colonel Juan Davis Bradburn built Fort Anahuac to enforce Mexican laws. This led to conflicts known as the Anahuac Disturbances in 1832 and 1835, which helped spark the Texas Revolution. The town was officially named Anahuac in 1831 and became a city in 1948.
