Big Changes Are Coming to Texas Mail, Here’s What You Need to Know
KNGT-FM - Some big changes are happening with your mail in Texas, and they might surprise you. The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) just started a new plan that could make some mail arrive faster, but it might also slow down other deliveries. Will your mail get to you quicker… or take longer? Here’s what Texans need to know.
I don’t send a lot of mail myself—just a birthday card now and then or a holiday package. Most things I do are online these days. But when I do need to send something, I want it to get there on time. That’s why these new changes at the USPS are important.
The changes started on Tuesday as part of a two-phase plan to save money. The USPS hopes to save $36 billion over the next 10 years.
Even though some people are worried about slower service, the USPS says most folks won’t notice any difference. In fact, some people might even get their mail faster.
USPS says these changes are all about making things better in the long run. They want to deliver mail more quickly, use better systems, and save money so the Postal Service can keep running strong in the future.
What’s Changing for Texas Mail?
The USPS didn’t name exact cities or towns, but they did say some areas will now get faster local service. That means mail sent within the same region could show up in 2 or 3 days—quicker than before.
Here’s what the USPS says about the changes:
- 75% of people won’t notice any change
- 14% will see faster mail delivery
- 11% may see slower delivery times
First-Class Mail will still take between 1 and 5 days to arrive. But other types of mail, like packages or magazines, might be delivered in a shorter time.
For example, if you send a package from Houston to a nearby town, it could get there in just 2 days. But mail going across the country could still take up to 5 days.
These changes affect many types of mail, like:
- First-Class Mail
- Magazines and newspapers (Periodicals)
- Advertising (Marketing Mail)
- Media Mail and Library Mail
- USPS Ground Advantage
- Priority Mail
- Priority Mail Express

The second round of changes is set to begin on July 1, 2025, and the USPS says they’ll share more details before then.
Some lawmakers are worried, especially for people who rely on the mail for things like paychecks or medicine. But the USPS says their goal is to modernize the system, save money, and make delivery better across the country, including right here in Texas.
