Angola Prison Rodeo: A Unique Louisiana Tradition
The Angola Prison Rodeo, a long-standing Louisiana tradition, especially in my family returns this October, offering spectators a chance to witness one of the most unique rodeo events in the country. Hosted by the Louisiana State Penitentiary, the Angola Prison Rodeo is not only an adrenaline-pumping experience but also an opportunity to support the rehabilitation programs for incarcerated individuals. There are TONS of Crafts and Homemade Items for purchase and some of the best food around.
Event Overview
The Angola Prison Rodeo began in 1965 as a small event but has since grown into one of the most popular rodeos in the South. Held every Sunday in October, the rodeo takes place at the prison’s 10,000-seat arena. This year, the rodeo dates are set for October 6, 13, 20, and 27.
Inmates from the Louisiana State Penitentiary participate as riders, showing off their skills and bravery in a variety of traditional rodeo events. Some of the fan-favorite events include bull riding, barrel racing, and the infamous "Guts & Glory" event, where riders attempt to grab a poker chip tied between the horns of a raging bull. While these events are undeniably thrilling, they also serve as a platform for inmates to demonstrate personal growth, responsibility, and teamwork.
Beyond the Rodeo
In addition to the rodeo itself, visitors can explore a variety of crafts created by the inmates. The Angola Prison Hobbycraft Sale is a highlight for many attendees, offering handcrafted jewelry, leather goods, paintings, woodworking, and more. These sales contribute to the inmates’ rehabilitation by providing them with vocational skills and a source of income.
There are also plenty of food vendors offering everything from barbecue to classic Southern fare, making it a full day of entertainment for all ages.
Ticket Information
Tickets for the Angola Prison Rodeo are in high demand and sell out quickly, so early purchase is recommended. Ticket prices are $20 for all seats, with no reserved seating available. Gates open at 9:00 AM, and the rodeo begins at 2:00 PM each day.
Tickets can be purchased online through the Angola Prison Rodeo's official website or by calling (225) 655-2607 or (225) 655-2030. No tickets are sold at the gate on the day of the rodeo, so plan accordingly.
Safety and Security
Due to the unique location, security is a priority. Visitors are required to pass through metal detectors, and all bags are subject to search. Cell phones and other electronic devices are not allowed inside the prison grounds. Clear instructions are provided upon purchasing tickets to ensure a smooth entry process.
Support for Rehabilitation
Proceeds from the rodeo and hobbycraft sales go directly into funding educational and recreational programs for inmates, helping to provide a positive path toward rehabilitation. The Angola Prison Rodeo stands as a testament to the ability of such programs to transform lives, even in one of the most infamous prisons in the United States.
For an unforgettable experience that blends heart-pounding excitement with a chance to support meaningful rehabilitation efforts, the Angola Prison Rodeo is a must-see event this October.
