I ascribe the Jimmy Buffet school of what's wrong with humanity. Buffet in his song Fruitcakes laments that the "cosmic bakers took us out of the oven a little too early and that's the reason we're as crazy as we are". I can't say that I disagree with Buffet or his friend Desdemona's reasoning.

We as humans are the masters of our own destiny. Quite often the roadblocks that show up in our path aren't put there by anyone or anything other than ourselves. In other words, we need to get out of our own way.

The only way to get out of yourself is to see yourself from a different point of view. Think about this scene in the film Dead Poet's Society.

Robin Williams was masterful in that movie as an actor. Later in real-life Williams took his own life. I wonder if Robin had known about "the glass of water" if maybe his outcome would have been different.

I know for me this simple question about a glass of water and the subsequent explanation has certainly given me cause to reevaluate things in my day to day world.

Here is the clip from TikTok User  @thementorhouse.

The professor in the video is holding a glass of water and he queries his students, "How heavy is this glass of water?". As you might imagine the guesses were usually made in ounces or pounds but that wasn't the point the educator was trying to make.

After allowing the students to guess he told the class, "How heavy the glass of water depends on how long I hold it".  He went on to explain that statement this way.

He said if the glass is held for just a short time, it's not a problem. If it's held for several minutes longer his arm will begin to ache. If he held the glass for several hours or most of a day his arm will eventually go numb and become paralyzed.

So, this doesn't sound very life-changing, but it actually is.

The professor went on to explain to the class that the worries in life are like the glass of water he had been holding. If you give your worries just a little thought, there's no problem. However, the longer you think about those troubles the more they will cause pain and suffering and eventually break you.

His advice, always remember to put down the glass.

That's a powerful message if you ask me. No matter what problems you are facing in life those problems do not define your life. Sure, you need to confront and face your issues but there is also something to be said for simply letting go.

So, as you stumble headfirst into Thanksgiving and the stresses of family and friends and relationships remember to put down the glass. Those concerns will be just fine if you simply let them go and enjoy the moments for what they are and not for the burden you've allowed them to become.

Oh, by the way, a good night's sleep or a nap will improve almost any situation.
