Forecasters with the National Weather Service are suggesting that the first full week of back to school for many South Louisiana school systems will be one that puts each school's air conditioning system to the test. Heat index values approaching 100 degrees or more will not be uncommon for much of the I-10 corridor over the next few days.

Temperatures over the weekend were kept in check by passing clouds and showers as a weak tropical wave passed south of the state in the Gulf of Mexico. That system has since moved into far south Texas. And with the exception of a weak tropical wave south of Bermuda, the tropics are once again quiet.

With the absence of a catalyst to kick off afternoon showers and thunderstorms, rain chances will be minimal across South Louisiana to start the work week. When the rain chances go down, the temperatures go up. Hence the anticipated high temperatures are in the lower 90s today through Wednesday.

There will be a minimal threat of pop-up showers and storms each day but that threat will be 20% or 30% at best. The next big threat of rain won't arrive in the area until Thursday morning. Forecasters have ramped up the rain chances for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday considerably.

Those showers and storms will come courtesy of a developing weather system over the southern Great Plains. That system should move into northern Texas and Arkansas by midweek and will draw moisture in from the Gulf of Mexico as well as provide enough instability in the atmosphere to kick off the greater threat of showers and storms to close out the week.
