The Harlem Globetrotters are coming back to the Lake Charles Civic Center. The team was founded 95 years ago, in 1926. The original name of the team was the Chicago Globe Trotters. It changed again in 1928 to the New York Harlem Globe Trotters and again in 1929 to the Harlem Globetrotters.

The team was formed in order to provide extra entertainment in dance halls to increase attendance at the time. They would perform various exhibitions to the declining attendance in these halls that were starting to lose money. The all Black team rocked the world when they beat out the best white basketball team at the time. The team they beat in 1948 to make that headline was what we know now as the Los Angeles Lakers.

As the team began to tour more and beat more and more basketball teams, the NBA began to grow across the nation. As the all Black team beat more and more white teams, the NBA decided to begin adding Black players into the organization in the 1950s. The first Black player ever added to the NBA was a Harlem Globetrotter. Boston picked up Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton as the first ever Black player to enter into the NBA.

Despite being known to always win against the other team, the Globetrotters have lost a game in the past. They were beaten by the Washington Generals in 1971 when they lost track of their lead while doing their well-known tricks. They do admit almost 30% of the game is real while the other is full of tricks and skits to entertain.

See them live at the Lake Charles Civic Center August 9 at 7:00pm. Tickets go on sale at the Box Office on June 25.
