A man who authorities thought was killed and eaten by an alligator has been determined to have already been dead from an overdose.

According to NBC News, before the partially eaten body of Michael Ford II, 45, of Florida was discovered in the mouth of an alligator in a canal in Fort Meade, Florida on June 27, he had last been seen on June 23, by friends and family.

A Polk County Florida medical examiner told the news site that it was his opinion that Ford's cause of death was methamphetamine intoxication, and that the alligator attacked after the man had died.

A hand and foot was found in the stomach of the alligator.
