Red Hot Chill Peppers bassist Flea recalled how his first Grammy award became a garden shovel at the hands of his young daughter.

The band won Best Hard Rock Performance for “Give It Away” in 1993, and the members received their gold-plated trophies accordingly. Sometime later, Flea’s hand-built gong went missing.

“Grammys are awesome,” he told KROQ in a recent interview. “But after we won our first Grammy, like three years later, my mom said, ‘Michael, where’s your Grammy?’ And I was like, ‘I don’t know, Mom – I put it somewhere.’” He didn’t realize that Clara, who was 5 at the time, had got her hands on it.

“Months after that, my gardener came out of the backyard, in the garden, and you know how the Grammy looks like an old record player with the horn on it? My daughter had unscrewed it and was using it as a shovel for the garden. It had been out there in the dirt for the whole winter!”

While Flea said he was “grateful to win” the accolade, he added that he was “just not really an awards guy.” Asked how he celebrated a win, he joked: “I usually drop about six or seven hits of acid, get naked, paint my whole body in lipstick and run down the street screaming like mad. It’s not really a celebration – I actually do that every day.”

The Chili Peppers – who’ve won six Grammys to date – just released a new album, Unlimited Love, their first to feature guitarist John Frusciante since 2006’s Stadium Arcadium. They’ll start a world tour in July.
