Over the years Lake Charles has seen a lot of schools closures from W.O. Boston, Immaculate Heart of Mary, Sacred Heart, Rosteet Elementary, Reynaud Middle, Lake Charles-Boston and many others. It’s sad to see schools close, especially when they had a rich history in the communities they served. Sometimes building programs, sponsorships, partnerships with area businesses and industries to help with funding are ways to launch safety nets to keep schools open. Your child’s education is worth your attention.

The Calcasieu Parish School Board announced they are considering another school reconfiguration plan, which will be addressed at the upcoming Budget Committee Meeting on May 26, 2020. The following schools are in jeopardy:

• T.H. Watkins Elementary
• Combre-Fondel Elementary
• John F. Kennedy Elementary
• J.D. Clifton Elementary

Ultimately, it’s up to the parents, faculty, churches, and city leaders to make sure they survive. If your child’s education at these schools is important, you have to speak up. Parents, guardians, and community members have an opportunity for their voices to be heard at the following events open to the public:

1st Parent Meeting
May 20 at 5 p.m.
T.H. Watkins Pavilion at 2501 7th Avenue

2nd Parent Meeting
May 21 at 5 p.m.
Combre-Fondel Pavilion at 2115 Fitzenreiter Road

Show up to these meetings and show your support for the students and educators at these schools. Voice your concerns and ask questions. Your child’s education is at stake. For more information, call CPSB at 337-217-4000.
