The Cowboys went toe to toe with one of the best teams in the Southland Conference Saturday evening. But in the end, Sam Houston State left town with a 28-17 victory at Cowboy Stadium. The Pokes dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the SLC. The Bearkats won their second conference game and moved to 3-2 on the season.

McNeese led 17-15 after three quarters thanks to the best game of the season for QB Cody Orgeron. The junior completed 18 of 40 passes for 280 yards, 2 touchdowns, and two interceptions. The TD passes went to Cyron Sutton for 67 yards and Draysean Hudson for 27. But while the passing game got on track, the rushing game was held to just 38 total yards. Orgeron led the team in rushing with 17 yards. Bailey Raborn added a 43-yard field goal for the final score for the Cowboys. McNeese had a 14-9 lead at the half.

Trailing by two after three quarters, the Bearkats offense got moving in the fourth. Behind backup QB Ty Brock, the Kats held the ball for nearly 11 minutes, scoring to quick TDs early in the quarter and used their defense to keep the Cowboys off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Sam Houston State held the ball for nearly 37 minutes to the Pokes 22. Nathan Stewart had 157 yards receiving on 10 receptions and a touchdown. Kyran Jackson added 111 on the ground with a score. Defensively, the Bearkats sacked Orgeron three times including a second-quarter safety.

McNeese will host Southeastern Louisiana next Saturday afternoon with a 4:00pm kickoff.
