A fast start by Nicholls State propelled the Colonels to a 34-20 Southland Conference win over McNeese in Thibodaux Saturday evening. The loss ended the Cowboys' three-game winning streak and knocked them out of playoff contention. The Pokes are now 6-5 overall and 4-4 in the SLC. The Colonels remain alive for the conference championship and a possible playoff spot at 7-4 (6-2) on the season.

Nicholls State jumped out to a 24-7 lead early in the second quarter and outgained the Cowboys 251-12 in the first quarter alone. McNeese ended the first half with just 36 yards of offense and trailed at the break 27-7. For the game, the Colonels had 517 yards of offense to the Cowboys 236.

It was a record-setting day for WR Cyron Sutton as he caught six passes to give him 65 on the season, a new school record. Sutton caught one of QB Cody Orgeron's touchdown passes, Trever Begue had the other. Orgeron finished 18 of 36 for 184 yards and the two touchdowns. The highlight of the game for Mcneese came in the first quarter when Mason Pierce returned a kickoff 95 yards for a score to cut the lead to 10-7. It is the second straight game McNeese has had a kickoff return of 95 yards or more for a score.

Mcneese will wrap up the 2019 season in Beaumont against Lamar next Saturday afternoon at 3:00pm.
