Argument for Circumcision

  1. Health Benefits: The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) states that circumcision has health benefits, including a reduced risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs), sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like HIV, and penile cancer.
  2. Hygiene: Circumcision makes genital hygiene easier, as it reduces the buildup of smegma, which can lead to infections and irritation.
  3. Cultural and Religious Tradition: Many parents circumcise their sons for religious or cultural reasons, particularly in Jewish and Islamic traditions. It can be an important part of identity and belonging.
  4. Social Norms and Aesthetics: In some societies, circumcision is common, and parents may choose it to help their child fit in with peers or match the appearance of other family members.
  5. Parental Right to Decide: Since infancy is the best time for circumcision in terms of healing and pain management, parents may see it as a responsible decision for their child’s future well-being.

Argument Against Circumcision

  1. Lack of Medical Necessity: While there are potential health benefits, organizations like the AAP do not recommend routine circumcision for all infants, as the benefits are not significant enough to outweigh the risks for everyone.
  2. Ethical Concerns & Bodily Autonomy: Critics argue that circumcision is a form of bodily alteration performed without consent, and the decision should be left to the individual when they are old enough to choose.
  3. Pain and Risks: Although considered a safe procedure, circumcision does involve pain, bleeding, and potential complications such as infection, excessive bleeding, or improper healing.
  4. Loss of Sensation: Some studies suggest that circumcision reduces sensitivity in the penis, which could impact sexual pleasure later in life.
  5. Changing Cultural Norms: Circumcision rates are declining in some Western countries, and the procedure is no longer seen as the default choice. Some parents may choose to avoid it in favor of allowing their child to make the decision later.

Ultimately, the decision to circumcise an infant son is personal, influenced by medical, ethical, cultural, and religious considerations.
