Last week was National Police Week, when we honored the brave men and women who serve, have served, and gave the ultimate sacrifice for the safety of our community.

We did a story to honor those officers who died in the line of duty because they were just doing their job to protect us here in Calcasieu Parish, putting their lives on the line and they paid the ultimate price.

With that being said, last week the Calcasieu Parish Law enforcement academy graduated 40 new officers in a small ceremony on May 12 due to the coronavirus and social distancing protocols.

It was the 123rd class to graduate from the academy. Wow, that is crazy because it makes me think back to when I graduated from the same academy. I was part of the 61st basic graduating class back in June of 1997. It is hard to believe how many more classes have come after me.

There were officers from the Calcasieu, Vernon, Jeff Davis, Cameron, Allen, and Beuaregard Parishes along with the Lake Charles and Westlake City Police Departments, Coushatta Police, Ward 3 City Marshals office, and DeQuincy Police Department.

Congrats to all the new officers and thank you for signing up to serve and protect our great community. Be safe out there.
