Reports have surfaced that the Boy Scouts Of America (BSA) have filed for bankruptcy protection.

NBC is reporting that the organization has been financially rocked by multiple cases alleging sexual abuse of boys. The organization has filed for Chapter 11 protection.

A spokesman for the Boy Scouts Of America told NBC News:

(The filing has) two key objectives: equitably compensate victims who were harmed during their time in Scouting and continue carrying out its mission for years to come. The BSA intends to use the Chapter 11 process to create a Victims Compensation Trust that would provide equitable compensation to victims.

Could the Chapter II filing have a more sinister reason behind it other than financial reasons?

With the filing for bankruptcy protection, the Boy Scouts Of America get to take away the most powerful weapon each abuse victim has: a jury trial. All the cases will be moved away from each individual state court and transferred to federal bankruptcy court.

Lawyer Michael Pfau told NBC News:

Juries don't like fact patterns where children are abused by trusted leaders...an entity like the Boy Scouts has to consider their exposure.  (They) have a horrible, sordid history of child abuse in the ranks. They fought very, very aggressively to keep the extent of the abuse from the public.
