In Eastern music he was considered a classical musician, in the Western world, a rock icon of the 60's. George Harrison once called him "The Godfather" of World Music."
He was a great contributor to the "sound" of the late 60's, but not really a fan of the music itself. He was appalled when he saw Jimi Hendrix set fire to his guitar.
