Spoof Site Fools Some With Disturbing but Fake Marijuana News

So Marijuana has been legalized in Colorado. The cloud could be seen rising from New York city. Well that's not exactly true and neither is the news of Marijuana deaths.

Here is the headline many are seeing on facebook "Marijuana Overdoses Kill 37 in Colorado On First Day of Legalization." The problem with these satirical sites is that people believe the stories and the story gets taller as people talk about it. The site even says  "Our stories are purely fictional. However they are meant to address real-world issues through satire and often refer and link to real events happening in the world."

The story quotes a doctor using the name of the doctor on the TV show "Lost." The hospital mentioned in the story had to issue a statement to let people know that no one was dying from Marijuana overdose in their hospital. This was exactly the kind of response these satirical web sites look for. Be careful when you read something that seems upsetting or shocking and always check your sources.
