Shots Fired on Capitol Hill, Shooter Reportedy Killed [UPDATED]

An exchange of gunfire on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. has led to the death of a suspect and the injury of a Capitol Police officer.  The female suspect involved reportedly tried to ram a security barrier at the White House and then fled to Capitol Hill.

Miriam Carey, 34, struck the barrier, which deployed the airbags of her black sedan.  CNN stated that a her one-year-old child was also in the car.  She fled toward the Capitol, and officials authorized the use of deadly force.  Her family says she may have been suffering from post-partum depression.

Officials stopped the suspect's car near the Hart Senate Office Building, though it's unclear whether or not the driver stopped her car or if the car was stopped by gunfire. Shots were exchanged.  Some reports claim as many as a dozen shots were fired.  The Capitol Police officer who was injured appears to have been hit by a car and not shot as previously reported.  The child was unhurt.  No weapons were found in her car.

Capitol Hill was placed under a lockdown, with workers ordered to close doors and windows.  The lockdown did not last long.  MSNBC reported that the shooter situation had been "stabilized" by Capitol Police.

UPDATE: 2 p.m. -- The driver may have rammed a security barrier at the White House and then fled toward the Capitol.

UPDATE: 1:56 p.m. -- A car chase may have been involved shortly before the shooting, starting at the White House and heading to Capitol Hill.  The lockdown is about to be lifted, according to CNN's reports.

UPDATE: 1:50 p.m. -- Senators are being told to shelter-in place.  The injured person has been reported as a police officer.

UPDATE 1:45 p.m. -- Up to a dozen shots fired near Hart Senate Office Building.

UPDATE 1:43 p.m. -- One person has been reported as injured, according to CNN.

Multiple news sources are reporting that multiple shots -- maybe as many as a dozen, according to CNN -- have been fired near the U.S. Capitol Building.  The entire complex has been placed on lockdown.  This story is continuing to break, and we will continue to update this story.
