Yesterday morning, while answering a domestic call in Jennings, Sergeant Ricky Benoit was shot by a suspect at the scene. That suspect, George D. Lowdins of Jennings has now been charged with attempted murder of a police officer.

According to Sergeant James Anderson of the Louisiana State Police:

 

While searching the residence, Sergeant Benoit was shot in the neck by 30-year-old George D Lowdins of Jennings with a .380 caliber pistol.  Lowdins had been hiding in a bathroom closet.  After firing the shot, Lowdins attempted to flee the scene but was subdued by the other Jennings police officer.

Sergeant Benoit was transported by air ambulance to a Lafayette hospital.  No one else was injured.

During questioning, Lowdins admitted shooting Sergeant Benoit and was booked into the Jefferson Davis Parish Jail and was charged with attempted first degree murder of a police officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, resisting an officer by flight, and domestic abuse battery.
