A Lake Charles man is charged with attempted second-degree murder after shooting his girlfriend in the leg during an argument that turned into a physical altercation.

According to a media release from Capt. Kevin Kirkum, officers with the Lake Charles Police Department responded to the report of a shooting at 2341 Dewey St. on Monday, January 21, 2019, where a female was shot in the leg. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Investigators determined "the female was shot by her live-in boyfriend, Joseph Leroy Collins, 52 after an argument turned physical". A gun was reportedly "produced and shots were fired striking the victim twice", with Collins fleeing the scene afterward. There were also three children in the home at the time of the shooting, said Kirkum.

Leroy Collins turned himself in a few hours later at the Lake Charles Police Department and was arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder. His bond is set at $350,000.
