Not content with adding Lord of the Rings, Dredd and Star Trek to his pop culture resume, Karl Urban is taking on Amazon’s The Boys. The fan-favorite star will lead the new adaptation of Garth Ennis’ comic, as directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

Urban will return to TV to take the leading role of Billy Butcher, who recruits a team of operatives to take down corrupt superheroes. The series also stars Jack Quaid as “Hughie,” Jessica Jones star Erin Moriarty as Starlight, Jessie T. Usher as superhero A-Train, Chace Crawford as “The Deep,” Laz Alonso and more. Here’s how Amazon describes the series:

In a world where superheroes embrace the darker side of their massive celebrity and fame, The Boys centers on a group of vigilantes known informally as “the boys,” who set out to take down corrupt superheroes with no more than blue collar grit and a willingness to fight dirty.

Rogen and Goldberg will direct the eight-episode adaptation of Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic, as written and showrun by Supernatural creator Eric Kripke. The one-hour series was previously eyed for Cinemax, while production is expected to begin this spring for a 2019 premiere.

Urban’s casting should put to rest any speculation the Dredd star might reprise his role for Mega-City One, but is The Boys an acceptable substitute?
