Back in 1968, my family moved to Lake Charles. We moved into the nice, sunny house in the picture and got settled in.

After the first night in the house, my mom asked me, 'What was that weird music you were listening to last night'? I told her that I didn't listen to any kind of music at all. Yet she did hear some weird music. A few months later, I heard it, too.

And that was just the beginning.

Several times after that, my mom would ask about the music and, as always, I hadn't been listening to music.

One odd day, while my folks were at work, I decided to exchange bedrooms with them. So, without asking, I did the deed.

That night as I was falling asleep, I heard this very strange singing coming from the vicinity of my closet. It wasn't like real singing. it was sort of like a little kid singing an odd melody in a wistful sort of voice. No music accompanied it. Just this sing songy little voice. I would have sworn it was coming from the closet.

I got up and went to the closet, but the moment my hand touched the door, the singing stopped. When I turned to go back to bed, the singing started up again. I knew right away that this was the music my mom had been hearing.

I heard the singing quite often after that, but it never really bothered me. Sometimes when I would hear it, I would go to the closet, touch the door and it would stop. Eventually, the music stopped all-together.

That's when the cold spot in the hall developed. That's all. Just a cold spot in the middle of the hall. No sounds, no voices, but no matter what the temperature outside, there was a cold spot in that hallway. The voices came soon after that.

My mom heard the voices first. If you stood at the end of the hallway and listened very closely, you could hear the voices of two men talking very quietly. It was like the were whispering just loud enough to be heard. I have to admit that, unlike the singing, the voices were a bit unnerving.

One of my girlfriends was visiting once and came out of the bathroom at the end of the hall and she was as white as a sheet. She had known about the voices, but this time she heard them for herself. I asked if it sounded like two men whispering and she looked at me and said, 'No, it sounded like two men who were very angry about something.'

Another very odd thing about the house happened after I moved away and my parents were still there.

Before I tell you the next 'odd thing', I have to impress upon you that my old man was not given to flights of fancy. He had no belief whatever in ghost, haunted houses or anything even vaguely connected to the supernatural. That's what makes what happened next even more spooky.

My folks were in their room one winter afternoon when, according to my father, they heard a man shout, 'I'm going to kill you'! The threat was followed by two shotgun blasts. My dad said they both jumped up and ran to look out the window as the scene seemed to be taking place just outside their bedroom window.

When they got to the window, all they saw was the elderly lady across the street watering plants.

There were other odd things about the house. Locked doors that would be found open. Doors slamming in the middle of the night. Odd sounds and talking in the hallway.

Believe it or not, we got used to the odd goings on and it just became part of the house.

I went back to the house several years later and asked the new owners if they ever heard odd things in the house.

Nothing.

Do I believe the house was haunted? Well, I don't really buy into that whole thing. Can I explain anything that happened in that house? Not even almost.

Happy Halloween.
