Department of Health Issues Advisory for Three SWLA Beaches

Lake Charles I-10 Beach
Philip A. Guillory

The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) has a weekly beach monitoring program where they analyze the water quality at beaches along the coast to make sure the water meets the standards of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The latest report is in, and three Southwest Louisiana beaches have high bacteria levels. Yikes!

Testing is done for enterococci bacteria, commonly found in sewage pollution, which could cause disease, infection, and/or rashes, said the LDH.

Lake Charles North Beach, Lake Charles South Beach, and Rutherford beach have all been listed this week with an advisory. See the partial list below.

Get the full list of beaches in the state via the LDH site, as they continue to monitor the water quality along the Louisiana coast through their federally funded program, Beaches Environment Assessment and Coastal Health, a.k.a. the “BEACH Act.”

Last weeks downpour of rain and flooding can be attributed to the high levels of bacteria showing up in local waters, as well as the rise in temperatures. Be safe when hitting the beaches this summer. It may be a great idea to wear water shoes when visiting the beaches.

Though these beaches have bacteria advisory’s they are not closed to the public, but swimming is not advised at the moment. Be safe!
