Westlake, La. - A family is mourning the loss of a Lake Charles man who drowned in the Calcasieu River in Westlake over the weekend.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office (CPSO) responded to a call in reference to a possible drowning in the Calcasieu River on Mims Road, on Saturday, July 29, at approximately 7:40 p.m., said a CPSO media release.

60-year-old Danny L. Gabbard of Lake Charles was reportedly on a boat and jumped into the river and did not resurface. Gabbard’s body was retrieved from "under the water" by witnesses at the scene, said the media release. Deputies made attempts to revive him when they arrived, but he was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead on Sunday, July 30.
