1948 – Truman sends Congress Anti-Lynching Message
President Truman sent Congress a special message urging adoption of a civil rights program, including a fair employment practices commission and anti-lynching and anti-poll tax measures.
1936- Actor Duane Jones was born.
In 1968 Jones became the first African American to star in a mainstream horror film, Night of the Living Dead. Prior to his fame Jones was a English professor and directed at the Maguire Theater at the Old Westbury campus of New York State University, and served as artistic director at the Richard Allen Center in New York City. 1915 – Biologist Ernest E. Just Receives Spingarn Medal
Conceiving a child became easier, thanks to Biologist Ernest E. For his accomplishments he would receive the Spingarn medal for being a pioneer in cell division and fertilization.
1902 – Opera singer Todd Duncan was born
He originated the role of Porgy in ‘Porgy & Bess’ and helped to desegregate American Opera scene. Duncan became the first Black to appear with the New York City Opera in 1945. He had more than 2,000 performances in 56 countries as a concert singer, and would later teach music at Howard University, well into his 90’s. He died in 1998 at the age of 95.

1862 – District of Columbia abolishes slavery
District of Columbia votes to abolish slavery on this day.
1839 – Spark Plug Patent
Inventor Edmond Berger patented the spark plug. Thanks to his invention transportation is possible.
