I got a release from Carmen Million BBB President warning local customers of Entergy about a new con claiming to be collecting on late bills. Several consumers and businesses have been the target of this scam. The report says "consumers indicated that they received a call where the person on the other line identified her/himself as a representative from the local utility company, Entergy.  The scammer stated that the consumer was late paying their electric bill. The consumer was told that they needed to pay immediately, or utilities will be terminated.

However, instead of accepting payment by credit card or check, the caller wants consumers to pay by prepaid debit card. The scammer instructs you to obtain a prepaid debit card and call him/her back."

The Better Business Bureau says if a caller specifically asks you to pay by prepaid debit card hang up and call the customer service number on your bill. Your utility companies will except checks or credit cards. For more information log on to the BBB website.
