Dennis Jerome Bartie, 35, who was arrested earlier this month in the 1998 cold-case homicide of donut shop owner Rose Born was indicted by a grand jury yesterday.

Rose Theresa Born, 45, was found stabbed to death at her shop, Paradise Donuts, located on 18th Street, on July 8, 1998. She was killed around midnight and her body was found around 3:30 a.m.

Born was stabbed more than 30 times, authorities said. Her 1993 Toyota 4-Runner was taken from the scene, but found about 4 miles away.

Authorities used DNA evidence to connect Bartie to the crime. Bartie was imprisoned at Allen Correctional Center for a 2006 crime in Baton Rouge in which he was found guilty of attempted second-degree murder for stabbing another woman numerous times, Lake Charles Police Chief Don Dixon said. The victim in that case survived.

Upon questioning from detectives, Bartie admitted to killing Born because he needed a ride home, Dixon said.
