When I was growing up in Vinton, Friday nights in the fall were special. The whole town would head over to the football stadium next to the elementary school to watch the Lions take on that week's foe. It was an event that was being played out all across Louisiana. There was nothing like the smell of popcorn and mosquito spray!

The 2016 high school football season begins this Thursday and Friday with jamborees in a number of locations in Southwest Louisiana. Here is a list of places to catch a game or two this week:

The big jamboree is in Sulphur at Matt Walker Stadium. It begins at 5:30 on Thursday when Vinton takes on East Beauregard, followed by Jennings and Sam Houston, then Washington-Marion and St. Louis. On Friday, Barbe and Westlake get started at 6, and Sulphur vs South Beauregard will wrap things up.

Also on Thursday, the Jeff Davis Parish jamboree will take place in Welsh with Lake Arthur and Elton participating. And Iowa will host Dequincy. On Friday, Grand Lake will host South Cameron. The Allen Parish Jamboree will be played in Kinder with Oberlin and Oakdale. And Lagrange will be in Opelousas.
